To the traditional iconography of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) the artist adds the Father and the Son, as if to affirm the statement, in the Catholic form of the Nicene Creed, that the Spirit "proceeds from the Father and the Son." (See the Catholic Encyclopedia, s.v. "Filioque.")
